Pediatric Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Behavioral Therapies

Social Skills Training Groups

Children with special needs sometimes have great difficulty "fitting in" at school, home, or in the community. Interacting with others may be very difficult for them and they may need assistance in acquiring the skills necessary to maintain functional relationships with others. Difficulty with social interactions is likely to lead to difficulty making or maintaining friendships, behavioral issues, and low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is very common in these children because they have burned so many bridges that they begin to wonder "What's wrong with me?" It is hard for them to stop upsetting others and getting reprimanded for behaviors when they don't know what they are doing wrong. Some children learn how to interact at an early age and this is never an issue, however many children need to be taught the appropriate ways to interact and respect others.

The goal of the social skills class is to assist your child in improving his/her interactions with others in a more acceptable manner. We will focus on expressing feelings, waiting turns, politeness, sharing, and much more. The class size will be determined by the developmental needs of your child. Children with developmental disabilities, autism, or children just needing assistance with self-esteem issues on how to initiate interactions with friends, etc. are also welcome. This will be a time for interacting, communicating, and engaging your child in various activities to strive to gain increased positive social interactions for your child to carry over into home, school, and all other aspects of your child's life.

The sessions will be for one hour and the cost will be $40 per session for two children, $30 per session for three children, and $20 per session for four or more children. Refunds are available if we are given a 24-hour notice or more before the group session begins. This is very important due to the nature of the classes. If your child cannot make it to a session and it is a 2-person group then we would need to reschedule the other child as well.

Asperger's Clinic

Asperger's Syndrome is becoming widely recognized by professionals all over. Persons with Asperger's have various characteristics, some that include difficulties interacting with others, communication deficits, and challenging behaviors. After consulting with family members, child, and significant others our clinic and family members will collaboratively will decide on the areas to be addressed in your child's session.

Our Asperger's Clinic offers a range of services:

  • Group therapy: Group therapy is provided solely for persons with AS. We will engage children in hands on activities and games focusing on various social situations and much more. The focus will not only be on social interaction and engagement but we will also address specific behaviors, and teach positive replacement behaviors which are more socially acceptable. Groups will be divided by age and developmental abilities.

  • Individual Therapy: Sometimes Group therapy is too overwhelming in the beginning for persons with AS. After the initial observations and consultations we may feel that your child needs to acquire particular skills before beginning group therapy. Our clinic will work with your child one on one to help them develop the skills necessary to progress in being able to socially engage with others. If behaviors are an issue, they to will be addressed during the individual session.

  • In home therapy: Children with AS who are in school and parents feel they get plenty of interactions with others but are having difficulty controlling behaviors at home, then in home therapy may be what you need. We can come to your home and set up a program for you and your child to assist with decreasing challenging behaviors.

  • Social Stories: This is an approach that provides visual structure and sequencing to teach social skills and reduce problem behavior. Social stories are homemade pictographic stories that describe social situations and teach the child how to respond to these situations in an appropriate manner. They are written based on each child's individual needs through assessments and observations of situations that are difficult for the child. (These can be designed to address any setting in which your child may be exhibiting problem behaviors.

  • All sessions are for one hour

    Fees include:

    Group therapy - $40

    Individual therapy - $75

    In home therapy - $75

    Communication/Visually Cued Instruction

These services can be provided in our clinic or in the home setting. The use of visual cues as supports help children to understand verbal and social cues, which makes it easier for them to learn, communicate, interact, and develop self-control. Visually cued instruction can take on many forms such as: a pictographic or written daily schedule, a written activity checklist, and written symbols. One example of visually cued instruction is PECS.

    Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
PECS was developed as a communication system that could be taught very rapidly to children with autism who have no functional communication skills. The goal is to identify objects that may function as reinforcers for the actions of the child.

We will design visual support for your child in any setting to provide structure, scheduling, or communication needs.
